Mike ely & Ely Knives & Silver
Have you ever had a burning desire to do something in life that no matter what you do, you cannot suppress it? The last 20 years of my life have been a quest of sorts…. an unintended journey that I never planned to embark on. The year was 1997 when my wife purchased a knife kit for me from Texas Knife Supply. Little did she know that by giving me that gift the course of my life would change. Following the God given interests that had been in me since my birth, I put together that knife kit and so began my journey. During those first years knife making took a back seat to a growing family and full time farming in Nebraska. As our kids left the nest and went to college I was able to devote more time to the passion of creating something from raw parts that lay lifeless in to something of beauty that had function and purpose. As time went by my skills slowly improved.
My departure from full time to part time farming in 2008 opened up the opportunity for me to devote more time to my passion. Then in 2011 I attended my first American Bladesmith Society “hammer In” and joined the ABS as an apprentice. It was at that time that the learning curve to bladesmithing and knife construction was shortened with help from Mastersmiths like Steve Culver and Ray Kirk. Then in 2013 I began attending classes in Denver Colorado at the Denver School of Metal Arts to learn Silversmithing. The amazing teaching they provided gave me additional skills to create jewelry out of Silver and precious stones and in turn helped me also make better knives.
Another opportunity presented itself in the spring of 2015 when my friend and saddle maker John Ballard of Joplin Missouri asked me if I would be interested in making Straight Edge Razors! Of course, why not! Two years in I am the maker for Bell and Hat Straight Razor Co. Though my Journey has been long I feel as if I am just starting. I strive to make each knife, each piece of jewelry, and each razor better than the last. My guarantee is your satisfaction in the product you buy.
